Ken’s Profile
Ken is highly experienced professional engineer, incorporated with the Engineering Council and a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology. With nearly 5 decades of expertise in designing and developing surgical, scientific and security products, his career has been marked by pioneering innovations.
His industry contributions include the development of the first cold-light Paediatric Laryngoscope for Great Ormond Street Hospital, the design of personal security mirrors for Members of Parliament during the London IRA bombings, and the advancement of robotic mine disposal equipment.
In 2002, Ken founded Central Engineering Design Ltd, bringing his extensive expertise into the new era of product development. Since its conception, the company has been at the forefront of engineering excellence, delivering cutting-edge solutions tailored to security, medical and defence applications. One of his early projects involved designing a vacuum pump and filter holder for vapour capture in airfreight security. Leveraging his knowledge of anaesthetic systems, he went on to design and patent the first electric vacuum pump for the REST system, collaborating closely with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and the Department of Transport (DFT).

During the Afghanistan conflict – following the events of 9/11 – in response to the increasing threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) targeting NATO forces, Ken was approached by the Defence Animal Centre (DAC) to developed specialised canine training equipment. Using his expertise in stainless steel and surgical instruments, he designed a 12-arm scent detection carousel and linear stand, which were awarded NATO stock numbers, this system was rapidly deployed by the British forces, significantly improving their ability to detect explosive threats and save lives. Today, these training systems have become standard across Law enforcement agencies, Border Security teams, Customs authorities and correctional services.
Ken’s reputation for innovation and quality led to further groundbreaking work in medical detection research. Under Central Engineering Design Ltd he was commissioned to develop a modular training stand with interchangeable heads to assist in canine detection of medical conditions such Leukaemia and Prostate Cancer. This innovation later became instrumental in training detection dogs to identify COVID-19 virus during the global pandemic, further demonstrating the company’s impact on life-saving technologies and innovations.
Committed to advancing scent detection technology, Ken and his team continue to develop cutting-edge solutions that enhance canine olfaction for security, medical and defence applications.
